Most stucco repairs are judged by whether you can find them afterwards. This one had a harder test: the rebuilt column had to match a brick wall.

The problem
The column sits at the entrance to a driveway, attached to a low decorative wall finished in painted brick with a cream cap. The column needed rebuilding. That part is ordinary enough.
The complication is what it stands next to. A plain, smooth stucco column beside a brick wall does not read as a repair. It reads as a mismatch, permanently, from the street, and no amount of structural soundness fixes that. Whatever we rebuilt had to carry the same brick coursing as the wall it joins, or the job was not finished.
Rebuilding it
The photographs pick the job up mid-rebuild. The first show the column rebuilt in fresh stucco and floated smooth: sound, square, and completely wrong for its surroundings. That is the halfway point, and it is where a lot of contractors would stop and call it done.
Tooling the brick pattern by hand
The last photograph is the one that matters. Working into the fresh stucco before it set, we scored the brick coursing in by hand, using a level to keep the horizontal lines true, and worked the individual brick units into the surface so the pattern, the joint spacing and the proportions matched the wall alongside it.
There is no product for this. You cannot buy a brick finish in a bag. It is done by eye and by hand, against the wall you are matching, in the window of time before the stucco is too stiff to work and after it is too wet to hold a line. Get the coursing height wrong and every course above it is wrong too, which is why the level is in the photograph.
Why we treat this as the deliverable
Texture matching is the part of stucco work that separates a repair from a patch, and this job is simply the most visible version of that principle. A column that is structurally perfect but visibly different from the wall it adjoins has failed at the only thing anyone will ever notice about it.
It is the same standard we hold on an ordinary wall, where the texture we are matching is a sprayed or hand-floated finish rather than brick coursing. The wall does not care how hard the match was. It only shows whether you made it.
What this job should tell you
If part of your exterior needs rebuilding and it sits next to something distinctive - a brick feature, an older hand-worked finish, a decorative element - ask any contractor you are considering how they intend to match it. If the answer is vague, you already know how the finished job will look.
